The answer is yes; a Genshin Impact anime is currently in development. miHoYo and Genshin Impact announced a collaboration with anime studio Ufotable (known for Demon Slayer) in September 2022. the announcement came with a teaser trailer, which got many people pumped by the visuals of Teyvat landscapes. It is particularly well-suited as in-game engine because high-quality animation — fluid character combat scenes and lush world-building alike — are a key characteristic of anything Ufotable upholds.
Although we dont have any dates from anyone at miHoYo, estimates are putting such an anime out within the 1-2 year range of production boasts based on their average releasing schedule (by Ufotale). This would come as little surprise with Genshin Impact being the sort of universe that lends itself well to multiple episodes spanning over several season going across regions i.e. Mondstadt, Liyue and Inazuma (each adding different characters and story lines) due to the scale and complexity involved in the game.
It makes sense to adapt Genshin Impact into an anime, both from a business standpoint and in terms of storytelling. Genshin Impact has been a global phenomenon, even earning $4 billion in revenue and more than 60 million players in attendance since its 2023 release. This popularity suggests that there is a lot of interest in further media content in relation to the game. The TV show will give miHoYo a way to further the story beyond what it can do in-game, and target both current players and those who are fans of anime but don’t yet know the game.
Through announcing the news, miHoYo Co-Founder Liu Wei said that they want to “diversify the way in which players of Genshin Impact can engage with its world of Teyvat” – suggesting further expansions into media beyond gaming. Given that Genshin Impact is building up to character-driven narratives, Ufotable would appear to be a perfect fit due to their ability to mix explosive action with tear-jerking storytelling.
If they do — and deal as well with every major stakeholder as Netflix managed to juggle in order to get this even announced — the Genshin Impact anime could join the likes of Castlevania and Arcane as huge wins for both companies, critics, other fans of those franchises, and a net positive on exposure vs. enjoyment with everything it ties back into. For fans that are looking forward to the anime, keep an eye on miHoYo’s official announcements as they may release more information in the future about where it is in production.
